Kent is a villager who lives in Pelican Town with his wife, Jodi, and two sons, Sam and Vincent. He is away serving in the Ferngill Republic army against the Gotoro Empire throughout the first year of the game, and returns to live in the town during Spring of year two. During the war, he spends time in a Gotoro prison camp, worsening his PTSD.
Upon first meeting Kent, he makes a special effort to introduce himself at the farmhouse!
“Um, hello there. My name's Kent. I just got back last night... from overseas. My wife told me that a new farmer had moved in while I was gone. Well, I just wanted to introduce myself... I'll see you around.”
I've always loved this greeting, because it communicates so much about his character without explicitly stating so! He's so nervous and unsure, perhaps even a little afraid to introduce himself due to how unfamiliar civilian life is to him now.
LOVES... Fiddlehead Risotto & Roasted Hazelnuts
“Oh...! Mom used to give me this when I was a young boy. It brings back wonderful memories. Thank you.”

“Hey, now this is a really great gift. Thanks.”

“Ah... It's a... what is this, exactly? Hmm...”

“This... They gave this to me in Gotoro prison camp. I've been trying to forget about that. *shudder*.”

Three Hearts 1
When entering Jodi and Kent's house, a custscene will play, starting with the player walking into the kitchen.
Jodi says, "Hi (Player)! I'm just making some popcorn." before the sound of popping poporn can be heard. This, of course, causes Kent to shout in panic as he runs into the kitchen from the living room.
His frustration is evident as he reprimands Jodi with: "That sound... You should've known that sound would remind me of the war!"
Jodi then stops making popcorn, and Kent continues on explaining himself. "...I lost a lot of good friends in those bloody trenhes."
Then, Jodi attempts to comfort him by saying, "But, dear... popcorn was always your favorite before you left." Kent stares off into the distance and eventually responds with, "...Things have changed." Jodi then quietly asks the player's character if they can say something to Kent. There are three choices:

(minus 25 friendship.)
Kent gets angry and says, "You keep quiet! Stop trying to turn me against my wife." Then apologizes to Jodi.

(plus 50 friendship.)
Kent says the player is "absolutely right," and apologizes to Jodi.

(minus 50 friendship.)
Kent gets angry and says, "Don't lie to me! I hate lies more than anything!" Then apologizes to Jodi.

I have a lot of thoughts about Kent's "heart events"— if you can even call them as such. Most importantly, how I'd wish that there were more, and they they held more substance beyond just receiving cooking recipes! However, unfortunately, he's a mere side characters in the game, so it makes sense. I'll detail how I think/wish his heart events would play out in the headcanon section!
Despite being a relatively minor character in Stardew Valley, Kent does have some quests tied to him!
A Soldier's Star
To celebrate his anniversary with Jodi, Kent asks the farmer to bring him a starfruit! Upon receiving the starfruit, he quietly whispers to the player...
"Hey. Shhh... Don't let Jodi see.", following it up with...
"Ah, this looks juicy. She'll love it. Thank you so much."
This will earn the player 500g and 1 heart with Kent!
The Pirate's Wife

This quest doesn't belong to Kent, but he is part of it! First, you must speak to Birdie who lives on Ginger Island, who then asks you to find an old keepsake belonging to her husband. She then hands you an old war momento; a photograph of a soldier. This is where Kent comes in!
Handing Kent the war momento will trigger unique dialogue from him relating to the quest!
"...!"
"...Where did you find this?"
"... This man... We fought together in the war, Dave. He was like a brother to me."
"But... only one of us made it back."
"He never lost his courage, though. Even in the face of death. A true hero... I'll never forget him."
"Thanks for bringing me this... It means a lot to me."
"Here, take this. It's been sitting in the back of our cupboard for years, and we never used it."
Kent then hands the player some gourmet tomato salt... For some reason...
This quest doesn't earn the player anything regarding Kent, except for some backstory! Which is a gift itself, in my opinion!

- Kent likely suffers from PTSD caused by the time he's served in the army, under active duty in a war. This is most obvious during his three heart event, given his reaction to the sound of cooking popcorn. Also, during regular dialogue with him, he points out the fact that he has trouble sleeping; a common symptom of PTSD.
- In the three heart cutscene with Jodi, she states that: "But, dear... popcorn was always your favorite before you left.". Which is still true! Because if you take Kent to the cinema, popcorn is one of his loved treats to eat there!
- The chevrons on Kent's sleeve can be interpreted in several ways. Several countries use chevrons (whether pointed upward or downward) to indicate the rank of Corporal, including America, Australia, Brazil, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. The French, Italian, Korean, and Turkish military forces use variations of gold (or red) chevrons to indicate the rank of Sergeant. In the Chinese and Japanese military forces, two chevrons below a star or other symbol indicate the rank of Private First Class. The Russian military used chevrons to indicate various ranks in various branches until 2010.
- Sam tells us in dialogue that Kent used to be a garbage man back when they lived in Zuzu City! This not only lets us know that Kent and his family have not always lived in Pelican Town, but also tells us what sort of job Kent had before serving in the army.
- Sam also details that when he was younger, Kent would often take him on trips to the desert.
- Also, despite the fact that if you gift Kent an egg, it counts as a liked gift, he claims not to be a big fan of them during dialogue at the egg fesitval.

- He probably smells like cotton, due to army outfits.
- Due to his time in the army, he's gained various lifelong scars. Particularly one on his right cheek, a few on his arms, one across his chest, and a couple minor scratches on his back.
- His body is pretty hairy all over, but especially his chest, arms, and legs!
- Classic old man dad rock is by FAR his most favourite music genre, and he even dabbled in making music himself when he was younger! Following this, I think he would often play guitar for Sam when he was a baby to help his son go to sleep. This then encourages Sam to pick up the guitar too.
- I think Kent moved his family to Pelican town once Jodi fell pregnant with Vinent, in the hopes of giving his little family a happy, slow life. It's a few years after moving that he ends up having to join the war.
- Joining the army was his own decision, but he obviously comes to regret it. He just wanted to make more money for his family, really. And he thought he was protecting his country.
- Kent was the one that proposed to Jodi! He's a hopeless romantic, so he ends up proposing rather early.
- He enjoys fishing! Finds it relaxing. Uses it as a means to catch up on missed time with his sons. Nothing like a good ol' father son fishing trip! A trick he stole from his own father, I think.
- He swears like a sailor! Even accidentally around Vinent haha...
- Enjoys gridball, and he eventually strikes a friendship with Alex and Shane once returning back to the valley!
- Before the war, he was the main cook of the household! Cooking and baking is part of his therapy work, I think.
- Every weekend, if the weather is nice, he likes to host a family BBQ! This is time he gets to enjoy with the towns other dads, a space where he an relax with friends and drink a few beers maybe...
- Used to smoke, but quit some time in the army.
- He never truly opens up about his experiences at war, but he does get better in regards to his PTSD.
- His hair grows out naturally once leaving the army! He considers it a step in his therapy journey!
